My workplace is a small bedroom in my home! Nothing fancy, but with a large enough window to get good natural light! I do everything in that small workroom. Photographs of my product, shipping, supply storage and sewing. I even have a closet dedicated to dresses I finish to keep them nice and ready to get packaged to ship!
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in high fashion clothing lines, or sometimes in far less lofty places like a cake shop! I take inspiration from objects and images that make me feel something, as opposed to making me want to imitate or, reproduce something in my own way.
My biggest inspirations though, I must admit, are my two daughters! They love what I make them, and it's their love and appreciation for what I do, and what I provide to other families, that really gets my creativity going!
What are some of your goals, hopes, and dreams for your shop?
Wow, I struggled to really break this down to one paragraph.
A future, would be the short answer to all three. Long answer is, dance classes for my daughters, activities for my infant son, workshops and therapies for my Autistic daughter. Success in the sense of being able to keep my family clothed, and fed, my dreams aren't unattainable, as far as I see them. To me, helping my family prosper is the ultimate goal.
How did you first become interested in making your products?
I became interested when my eldest daughter had a special occasion coming, and I had no disposable income to buy her something suitable to wear. I had looked into tutu dresses on Etsy, but I either found them way above my price range, or far too thin for a formal function.
With that in mind, I looked up how to make them, and jumped in, solely to make her one. I made one for my youngest daughter, to try my skills on, and I was pleased with the results. I started to sell them locally, simple ones at first, enough to provide me with income to purchase the supplies for the dress I wanted to make for my eldest daughter. The rest as they say is history.
Do you work on your shop full time?
This is complicated because I'd say it's a yes/no answer. I'm a WAHM, so I make dresses between entertaining and doing 24/7 rearing of my youngest child who is 15-months-old, and getting my 12 and 9 year old off to school and dance class as well. Needless to say, I have quite a few late nights!
Do any of your designs have a special personal meaning for you?
Yes, the dress pictured has special meaning for me, because my daughter (the little girl modeling it) helped me design it. This was her Halloween costume back in 2014, and she and I worked very hard in making this special for her. She has ASD, (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and has an affinity for birds. With Ravens being some of the smartest birds on the planet; it seemed natural that she dress up as one for Halloween. We decided to go with a white chested raven, instead of the usual all black.
What are your goals for your business in the coming year?
My goals for the coming year are to expand my repertoire on Etsy, as well as opening a stand alone website. I started my business on Facebook, and didn't invest into Etsy until just this year. With being as busy a mom as I am, I'm trying to grow my business a step out of time so I can balance both being a mother, and an Entrepreneur.
